Woodworking projects generally require, well, wood.  You can get dimensional lumber (e.g. 2x4s, 2x10, ) and plywood from Home Depot, Lowes, Tart, TW Perry, etc.   Rough lumber is where you'll find more variety of types like maple, cherry, oak, etc.  Rough lumber is sold in 4ths, so a 2/4 thick piece of lumber will actually be 1/2 (as opposed to dimensional lumber, which is usually 1/2 inch smaller than the stated size).  Rough lumber is sold by the board foot.
