The Pistorius VN-B (WB) underpinner is a RED tool requiring training and authorization before use (Frame Shop Red Tool class).
The Pistorius VN-B (commonly referred to as the WB) is a highly durable, pneumatic V-nailer and underpinner used by custom picture framers to seamlessly join frame corners. Manufactured by the legacy Pistorius Machine Co., these vintage, heavy-duty machines are highly sought after on the used market for their reliable, "built-like-a-tank" construction.
Although the attached manual is for the Pistorius VN-A, much of the safety and basic information also applies to the VN-B
The VN-A an earlier pneumatic-assisted model series where specific clamping or firing functions is integrated into a control handle or specific valve configurations.
The VN-B is a slightly later revision that features standard pneumatic cylinder layouts, foot-pedal clamp actuation, and internal air-control configuration.
Essential Maintenance Tips
Because these machines are no longer in active production, keeping a used VN-B unit in prime working condition requires adherence to routine pneumatics maintenance:
- Prevent Foot Pedal Air Leaks: A common issue with the VN-B is air continuously releasing from the foot pedal. This is typically caused by dried-out internal O-rings. Introducing a few drops of lightweight pneumatic tool oil directly into the incoming air line inlet can safely lubricate the seals and halt the leak. See a steward if you are having this issue.
- Daily Lubrication: Add 4 to 5 drops of lightweight machine oil directly into the oiling hole located on top of the driver guide before heavy production runs to keep the firing pin cycling smoothly. 4-5 drops, no more!
- Filter-Regulator Setup: Ensure the air line is clean and dry. The lubricator cup should be adjusted to drip oil roughly once every minute during operation.
If you think an adjustment or repair is needed, please contact a steward.
