Loading a spool into the Bambu Lab AMS is a straightforward process, but there are a few "pro-tips" to ensure the internal feeder grips the filament correctly and avoids jams.

Preparation

Before inserting the spool, check the following:

  • Filament Type: Ensure it is a supported material (PLA, PETG, ABS, etc.). Do not use TPU.

  • Filament Tip: Use side cutters to cut the end of the filament at a 45-degree angle. This helps it pass through the internal odor sensors and PTFE connectors.

Step-by-Step Loading

  1. Open the AMS Cover: Unlatch the two clips on the front and lift the transparent lid.

  2. Place the Spool: Drop the spool into one of the four slots. Ensure the filament is feeding from the top of the roll toward the yellow feeder (over-hand feed).

  3. Align with Rollers: Make sure the rims of the spool are resting centrally on the black rubber rollers. If the spool is too light (nearly empty), it may jump during high-speed retractions; some users add a printed weight to the center of the spool to prevent this.

  4. Insert into the Feeder: Locate the grey/yellow "funnel" at the front of the slot.

    • Push the filament tip into the hole while simultaneously pressing down the grey lever on the feeder.

    • Push until you feel the internal motor "grab" the filament.

  5. Automatic Sync: Once the motor takes over, the AMS will pull the filament in a few inches to calibrate the tension and then retract it slightly.

    • If using Bambu RFID filament: The light on the slot will flash, and the material/color will automatically appear in Bambu Studio or on your printer screen.

    • If using 3rd-party filament*: The light will stay solid. You will need to manually "Edit" the slot on the printer screen or in the "Device" tab of Bambu Studio to set the material type and color.

*Don't forget – we do not allow other brands of filaments to be used in our printers. This is for informational purposes only.
