NB2: Purchase a Used Helical Head Jointer from an Existing Member to Replace Colo Equipment (Mike Dewan)

Issue:  Makersmiths has a number of colo items in the Leesburg Woodshop.  While this has been on the list of potential colo items to replace, funding was not available last year.  An opportunity has arisen to buy a good condition used piece of equipment to meet this need.

Solution:   Member Pete Biby has a used 8" helical head jointer which could be used to replace a colocated tool.  He is asking $1500 and has indicated he could provide a grant for installation of a 240v outlet.  An electrician has indicated an outlet could be done for $500.  I have looked it over and tested it to flatten a 7"  wide 6' rough cut walnut board and edge jointed the same board. It did a great job and did not load down while flattening the test board. The cutters are in good shape and have not been rotated. The the current cutting edge is in good condition and there are 3 unused edges. The infeed and outfeed tables need cleaning but are in good condition. A new version list cost is $3200 but some vendors might offer it today for $2600 (It is not certain that this price will be available for an indefinite term), plus shipping ($200), plus mobile base ($220), plus cost to run a 240v circuit ( the seller has offered a grant to install a circuit, an electrician has looked at the existing power service and has said this could be done for $500). Purchase of this would allow for the replacement of the existing  6" colo Delta jointer. I have had this on my planned replacement list for a year. Funds were not available last year however this used machine provides the opportunity to return the existing jointer to the owner and replace it with a MS owned machine for a total cost of less than half the cost of a similar new machine. It has been on my plan to replace all the woodshop Colo equipment with units MS owns.

Relevance to Tax Exempt Status:  None

Motion:  Approve the purchase of an 8" helical head jointer, Jet JET JWJ-8HH (from 2009/10) from MS member Peat Biby for $1500 to be drawn from the Tool Reserve.

Motion to Amend: retracted

Vote:  Motion carries by voice vote as originally written
